Kili Day 1 - Rongai Gate to Simba Campsite

Distance travelled: 7km

Altitude gained: 307m

It was a very pleasant start to the morning, leaving our hostel at 09.00. Our day sacks packed, our other items bagged up for the porters, we met up with our crew. Another half an hour or so of loading and we were off. It was a long drive to our start point, 3hrs. But the sights of African life is so interesting it wasn't too tedious.

I am writing this sitting in our tent at Simba Campsite, Rongai route. We are at 2671m above sea level having climbed 307m and walked 7km according to the signs (there is some discrepancy in the guide books, but my Garmin seems to agree with the signs). It has been a fantastic day, both Ruth and I enjoying the walk and following the ‘polepole’ (slowly) “rule” of the mountain. It is cold tonight though (already) and we are wrapped up in several layers and inside some snug sleeping bags. We have been treated to delicious Tanzanian cooking and feeling rather spoiled (well I am) having my table laid, meals provided and then cleared away (not to mention the tents put up and ‘luggage’ present on arrival). Looking forward to tomorrow.

Setting off. The first campsite. Our mess tent!
